Somewhere at the end of December, not only my mailbox was pleasantly surprised, but me as well. Full of disbelief and blushing cheeks I got to read that Bikepacking.com, the American website for everyone who likes cycling through mountains and valleys with minimum baggage, awarded me as one of their ‘Explorers of the Year 2017’.

The award honors, to put it in their words: ‘the people who have been instrumental in the bikepacking community with inspiring trips and acts of good will as it relates to bikepacking. It is dedicated to the intrepid few who’ve set out to experience the furthest corners of the backcountry, both across the globe and close to home, and thoughtfully shared their stories with the rest of us.’

Although I doubted whether, amongst so many others, I was worthy of this award. It also gave me a moment of pride and reflection. I was happy to learn that I can inspire others, let them discover new destinations, encourage them to link a journey to a good cause and bring the world closer to their feet.
I was touched by their words about my journey.

Thank you Bikepacking.com for giving me this platform. Please continue inspiring people and being the ultimate source of information for bikepacking, in the way only you can.
Thanks, I feel truly honoured!

I hope to inspire even more people to swap their seat in the living room or the comfort of their car to the saddle of their bike to explore an unbeknown adventure. This, in favor of, not only their own health, quality of life and world perspective. But hopefully also, in favor of, people and/or animals in need.
Meanwhile, I continue cycling diligently, with my head in the clouds and my feet on the pedals.

Ergens eind december, werd niet enkel mijn mailbox blij verrast, maar ook ik. Vol ongeloof en met blozende wangen kreeg ik te lezen dat Bikepacking.com, dé Amerikaanse website voor ieder die zich graag fietsend en met een minimum aan bagage door berg en dal begeeft, me als één van hun ‘Explorers of the year 2017’ uitriep.


De award is, om het in hun woorden te zeggen ‘een eerbetoon aan de mensen die hebben meegewerkt aan de bikepacking-community met inspirerende reizen en daden van goede wil met betrekking tot bikepacking. Aan de onverschrokken enkelingen die de verste uithoeken van het achterland opzoeken, zowel over de hele wereld als dicht bij huis, en hun verhalen zorgvuldig met ons hebben gedeeld.’


Hoewel ik twijfelde of ik, onder zoveel anderen, deze prijs wel waardig was, gaf het me ook een moment van trots en reflectie. Ik was blij te vernemen dat ik anderen kan inspireren, hen nieuwe bestemmingen kan doen ontdekken, hen kan aanzetten een reis aan een goed doel te koppelen, hen de wereld wat dichter bij huis te brengen.
Ik was geraakt door hun woorden over mijn trip.

Dank je wel om me dit platform te geven Bikepacking.com. Blijf mensen inspireren en de ultieme bron van informatie voor bikepacking zijn zoals enkel jullie dat kunnen.

Ik hoop nog meer mensen te inspireren hun zetel van salon of wagen te ruilen voor het zadel van hun fiets en op zoek te gaan naar onbekend terrein. Dit niet alleen ten voordele van hun eigen gezondheid, levenskwaliteit en blik op de wereld maar hopelijk ook van mensen en/of dieren in nood.
Ondertussen fiets ik naarstig verder, met mijn hoofd in de wolken en mijn voeten op de trappers.

    Dat is meer dan dik verdient! Dat het aanstekend werkt staat buiten kijf (vooral in mijn hoofd dan voorlopig) Je schrijfsels en foto’s spreken voor zich. 😉 Succes en geniet er nog van!!
